“
Every child has own light like a firefly in the darkness, no matter where the child comes from – prison, red light, slum area or streets. Every child should have right to live with dignity! That is why we are creating enabling environments for those kids to explore their uniqueness through education.
– Indira Ranamagar, Founder of PA Nepal
Junkiri Public School, also known as the Firefly Public School, has emerged as a highly effective strategy in the process of reintegrating children with parents who have been incarcerated. This innovative approach facilitates the reintegration of these children into their local communities, even before their parents’ release from prison. By establishing connections with family members at the local level, the children can maintain regular communication and face fewer challenges when obtaining legal documents or securing their parental property.

A crucial element of this strategy is the gradual assumption of responsibility by the community, which plays a pivotal role in accepting these children and supporting their reintegration. As part of this initiative, PA Nepal has set up three sustainable homes in Palpa, Buttabari-Jhapa, and Khudunabari-Jhapa. This program not only offers these children a stable environment but also underscores the significance of community involvement in the successful reintegration process.
- Junkiri is an alternative education system developed by PA Nepal to address the different transition for rescued children from prison into traditional Nepali schools
- Junkiri uses a hands-on learning methods where children learn by doing and seeing, rather than memorization.
- Teaches practical skills, such as handicraft, cooking, and farming in traditional academic subjects.
- Junkiri School in Sankhu and Jhapa also offer free education for children from local communities.
